Patents and Licenses Developed

The Office of Technology Management and Industry Relations (OTMIR), under the MU Office of Research strives to facilitate pathways for MU technology to create impact in our society, build and enhance relationships with industry and stimulate regional economic development. In FY2015, 71 disclosures were received, 19 licenses and options were executed and nearly $44 million in licensing revenue was received. OTMIR filed 73 U.S. Patent applications and had 25 U.S.-issued patents in FY2015. In addition, 197 NDAs and 391 MTAs were executed.

Lab-to-market: MU's licensing income from the commercializaiton of new technologies have reached more than $39 million in the past five years. To date, companies that have licensed products invented by MU scientists have received about $1 billion in sales revenues.

In 2011 MU received a $5 million grant from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation, through the Foundation's Translational Partnership Award Program. The goal of the partnership is to develop technologies that will save, extend and improve patient lives and relieve suffering from any disease or condition in any country around the world. The funds support collaborative projects between biomedical engineers and clinicians to take research discoveries to clinical practice.
