Pitch Competition, Sponsored by REDI, Inc., Fosters Innovation

The competition is during Bringing Up Business: Mid-Missouri's First-Ever Innovation Week


You have a shot at winning the grand prize of $5,000.

The Pitch Competition, sponsored by REDI, Inc., is part of Bringing Up Business: Mid-Missouri's Innovation Week 2016. The public event takes place at 10 a.m., October 10, 2016, in Bixby Lecture Hall on the campus of Columbia College. Competitors have the opportunity to compete for $10,000 in award money. General and presentation guidelines, key dates, the application process, and key contact information are below.

General Guidelines

  1. The competition will be open to the public and will start at 10:00AM CST in Bixby Lecture Hall, Columbia College, Columbia, MO on October 10th, 2016.
  2. Ten finalists will be chosen from the application pool to compete in the final.
  3. Each presenter will have 10 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for Q&A sessions. A panel of 4 judges will evaluate your ideas. Presentation time will be strictly monitored.
  4. You will be provided with your presentation time a week before the competition and your family and friends are welcome to sit through your presentation. You cannot attend other competitors’ presentations until you finish yours first.
  5. Winners will be announced immediately after the competition.
  6. It is up to you on how much time you want to spend on developing your idea to create a powerful presentation. Remember that it takes substantial amount of time to build and validate an idea. We want you to take this process very seriously and deadlines have to be strictly followed.
  7. You will also have to incorporate your business idea legally in the state you want to operate prior to October 10th, 2016. If you have already incorporated your idea in the state you want to operate, that’s great.
  8. If you are chosen as one of the 10 finalists you will have to go through the required background check. In addition you will have to submit a W-9 on your business entity prior to the competition. This is for the purpose of check disbursements to the winners. This is why it is important to incorporate your business in the state that you will be operating prior to the competition.

Presentation Guidelines

  1. Having a well thought out presentation will be very important to your success. Your presentation can include the following:
    1. Power Point slides
    2. Proto-Type: The Fishman Center has purchased a 3-D Printer for student use. At present the printer is located in the Art Department, main campus at Columbia, MO. If you are interested in using this printer to develop a proto-type for your product, please get in touch with Addison Stotler our resident 3-D printer expert.
    3. Videos
    4. Live demonstrations

(Any other visual aids that you require will have to be coordinated with the Fishman Center in advance.)

  1. Each of the 10 finalists will be provided a book called ““So what? who cares? why you?”. You will use this text to further develop your idea and prepare your presentation. It is our recommendation that your presentation cover the following topics:
    1. Introduction (company/ business idea and the presenter)
    2. Opportunity/ Pain/ Problem
    3. Value Proposition
    4. Market Size
    5. Competition
    6. Sales and Marketing Strategy
    7. Business Model/ Financials/ Projections
    8. Management Team
    9. Funding Requirements/ The Ask
    10. Appearance or how you look is very important while presenting. Dress code for your presentation will be business.
    11. Your final presentation will have to be e-mailed to the Fishman Center by Sunday, October 9th, 2016 by 5:00PM CST (no exception). Fishman Center will make the necessary copies to hand out to the panel of judges. For back-up purpose, you should also bring a copy of your presentation saved in a thumb drive on October 10th, 2016.


  1. The cash awards for the competition will be as follow; First Place: $5,000, Second Place: $3,000, Third Place: $1,000, and Audience Choice: $1,000.
  2. Check presentations to the winners will be made immediately after the event.
  3. All of the prize money will have to be utilized on direct business related expenses for your start-up.

 Key Dates

  1. Friday, September 9th, 2016: Application due by midnight.
  2. Friday, September 16th, 2016 – Ten finalists are notified.
  3. Sunday, October 9th, 2016 – Final presentation due by 5:00PM CT
  4. Monday, October 10th, 2016 – Pitch competition final from 10:00AM CT – 3:00PM CT

 We want you to take this process very seriously. We are spending a lot of time, money, and resources to support you and your idea. Take advantage of this opportunity for it does not come often. Dates and time will be strictly followed.

 Application Process

 If you are interested in submitting an application for the competition, you need to submit the following by Friday, September 9th, 2016, midnight.

  • Your full contact information, including name, physical address, e-mail address and a phone number where we can reach you easily.
  • If you have presented this idea on other pitch competitions, please provide the name of the competition along with the date when you presented it.
  • A 4 slides presentation that covers the following: Your idea, pain points or problems it solves, value proposition, and market size. The presentation needs to be done in PowerPoint. You can submit either a PowerPoint or a PDF file.
  • Though this is not a requirement for you to qualify you can also include a picture of a proto-type if you are introducing a product or a screen shot if you are working with a service, app, and others.
