Land Trusts 101: Creating Permanent Affordable Workforce Housing

The City of Springfield and Urban Neighborhoods Alliance, in partnership with NeighborWorks America will be presenting a two-day workshop on land trusts. The workshop will take place Monday & Tuesday, May 19 & 20.

Community land trusts combine affordable private home ownership with community ownership of land to help turn deteriorating neighborhoods into neighborhoods of choice and help prevent displacement of low-income residents due to gentrification.

MEDC's Volunteer Education and Outreach Committee has developed the "Fundamentals of Economic Development" workshop as an introduction for elected officials and volunteers on the economic development process. MEDC has partnered with the University of Missouri Extension's ExCEED program to administer the training.

The workshop is designed to give the nonprofessional a basic understanding of economic development principles, strategies and tools. Participants learn what economic development professionals do and where to go for assistance. The workshop is designed for city, county and state elected officials, members of local economic development organization board of directors, volunteers, and anyone else interested in learning more about the process of economic development.

Workshop topics include:

-Definitions, Principles and Strategies of Economic Development
-Strategic Planning
-Organizing and Funding Economic Development
-Developing a Strong Community
-Business Site Development
-Business Retention and Expansion
